As the world advances with new types of energy technologies and public safety continues to increase within urban environments, how electric fire trucks change will continue to move forward as a key component of emergency response. Electric fire trucks use electric motors, which play a major role in the fire truck's ability to function properly and efficiently.
The electric motors used in fire trucks differ from those found in most electric vehicles. The motor must be capable of providing instant high-efficiency power for rapid acceleration in emergency situations — enabling the fire truck to get to the scene, faster than it would otherwise. The ability of the electric motor to provide sustained high-torque output provides additional stability and control to the fire truck, especially for those with higher payloads (firefighting personnel/equipment). Additionally, electric motors must be highly durable and stable to function in extremely hot, humid and smoky fire environments.
To meet these extended levels of demands placed upon them, manufacturers have, of late, begun utilizing permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and high-efficiency AC induction motors in the new models of electric fire trucks currently being created. The combination of a PMSM motor and an AC induction motor is becoming commonplace due to both the overall superior energy efficiency of the motor types when used in conjunction with intelligent control systems used in today’s electric fire truck models, as well as having the capability to produce instantaneous high-efficiency power and provide precise demand-control via the use of speed regulation and regenerative braking, thus extending the life of the motor while reducing maintenance costs. Furthermore, silent mode and less vibration (as compared to the conventional fire truck engines) would allow for greater safety and reliability of the electric fire trucks when operating in emergency environments.

As nations continue to implement carbon-reduction initiatives and develop “green” emergency response strategies, it is anticipated by many industry experts that electric fire trucks will become more widely adopted throughout the world in the near future. The high-efficiency electric motor will be the driving factor behind the shift to electric fire trucks. In addition to the innovative technology being implemented into electric fire trucks, the electric fire truck manufacturers will continue to develop advanced technology in other areas, such as power density, thermal management, and intelligent monitoring systems that provide superior performance during emergency response operations.
The evolution of electric fire truck motors represents a paradigm shift not only of new energy (electric powered) systems, but also of an important contribution to public safety and sustainability of development.
